Ingredients
4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts2 T. butter
2 small cans of condensed cream of chicken soup
2 carrots, peeled & chopped
1 onion, diced
1 stalk celery, washed well and chopped
2 (10 ounce) packages refrigerated biscuit dough, torn into pieces
Water or Low Sodium Chicken Broth
This Slow Cooker Chicken & Dumplings recipe is an EASY and delicious version of those dumplings mom used to make. Enjoy!
- Place the chicken, butter, soup, carrots, celery and onion in a slow cooker.
- Fill the slow cooker with enough low-sodium chicken broth or water to cover ingredients.
- Cover. Cook for 5 to 6 hours on High, or 8 to 9 hours on Low.
- About 30 minutes before serving, place the torn biscuit dough in the slow cooker. Cook until the dough is no longer raw in the center.
Variation from a Facebook Friend: Omit water and vegetables, substitute with 3 cups chicken broth, and use bisquick drop dumplings instead of the biscuits. (Good substitute if you don’t have pop-biscuits on hand!)
Happy Crocking!

Amazing!!! This was sooo good – I tweeked it for the likens of the kids but only reduced the chicken to 2 breasts, cubed it, and reduced the biscuits to 1 can. They were licking their plates. Okay, I was too. Great recipe!
I made this recipe last night and it was awesome. It was incredibly easy and my daughter, husband and I all loved it and I will definitely make it again!
I am curious how the biscuits cooked. Were they gooey at all? Does it take right at 30 minutes for them to cook all the way through or just a bit longer?
Could I add egg noodles to this? If so when should I add them?
If I want to cook on low, how long would it need to cook? Would 10 hours be ok? I leave the house at 8 and get home just before 6.
Carrie this is a great question! Every recipe is differfent, as every crock pot is different, but as a rule of thumb, one hour on High equals about 2 to 2 1/2 hours on Low. Depending on your crock pot you may want to add 1/4 of your can of soup mixture with chicken broth or water to add extra liquid to cook on Low. Happy Crocking!
It says above in her recipe 9-10 hours on low so it will be fine.
WOW…I made this and it was delicious! (I did change 2 things: I used 1 can cream of chicken soup and 1 can cream of celery. and I used a small can of chicken broth instead of using water.) I shared the leftovers with my neighbors and I got a phone call for the recipe. They could not believe how easy it was to make. It’s good ol’ comfort food!
This was Delish!! I wouldnt change a thing! I cooked this on low for 9hrs and it was wonderful… family enjoyed it. Thanks for sharing all your wonderful recipes, sure helps a busy mom out! 🙂
I’m assuming the chicken breasts are not cooked when you put them in? If not, I just wasted 4 good chicken breasts…
Yes Susannah…that is correct! The chicken goes in raw, so it can cook in the juices. Happy Crocking!
This was AMAZING!! We all enjoyed it:)
I made my own dumplings from better homes and garden cookbook. They were really easy and good. A lot cheaper than store bought biscuits. Under chicken and dumplings
Just made this last night. Even my biggest food critic (mother of 4) said it was ‘pretty good’. Biscuits were gooey and took more like 45-60 minutes to cook. I used 6 breast and doubled most of the ingredients. Will DEF make again! Considering adding rice next time.
Do you cut the chicken before you put it in?
Hi Paige, when I make this recipe, I put the chicken in whole, and when I get ready to serve it, I take two forks and pull the chicken apart, and the family really does love this recipe! I sometimes even add some peas when I am adding the dumplings just to add another veggie! Happy Crocking!
Having six people at home, I had to make a little bit of a bigger batch…I also added a can of cream of celery soup instead of chopping celery. I forgot to get canned biscuits so I used Bisquik and made drop dumplins. A little salt and pepper and about a tablespoon of poultry seasoning…O M G!!! It smells soooo good in here! We’re about to sit down to dinner…I’ll let you know what the five guys think!
This was one of the best meals I have prepared in a looong time!! I cannot believe how easy it was and the end result was FANTASTIC!! My boys loved it… especially hubby!!
HUGE winner in this house!! Had my parents over too (made a bigger batch, so fed 7 people and still had leftovers!) Everyone loved it, and even my pickiest eater scraped his bowl! Will definitely make this one again=)
i was wondering can u use dumplings out of the freezer?
Hi Brandy! I have not used them from the freezer, but I certainly don’t see why not, you may just need to cook a bit longer! Thanks for the question, and Happy Crocking!

Could you please tell me how many people this serves? We are a family of 5 (3 small toddlers)
Hi Ashley, all of the serving sizes are in the upper right hand corner of the website page, but I am happy to share with you that this recipe serves 4-6! Happy Crocking!
Made this tonight for dinner and it was a big hit. Have a large slow cooker so I just doubled the recipe. Thanks so much!!!
Awesome – so glad you loved it! It’s one of my family’s favorites too. (and I always get to eat the leftovers for lunch the next day!!) Happy Crocking!
Fantastiic. So much easier than standing over a stove and the chicken turned out fantastic. Thanks!
I wanted to know if you used 1 pound of chicken or 2 pounds? I’m making it today and am using a pound
Hi Stefanie! 4 chicken breast usually equal about 2 lbs., but you can make it with one pound, it will just have less chicken in it… but it will still be delish! Happy Crocking!
I tried this in reg pot since I was home all day and not sure when went wrong. All good until biscuits. After 30in they had disappeared! Quit laughing please I already did all that!
Carol, I am so sorry this didn’t work for you, as it is one of our family favorites, and I really don’t know what happened???? Maybe you tore the biscuits too small, but it really is very good… hope you make it again! Happy Crocking!
In a regular pot if u peak (lift the lid) at all the dumplings disintegrate often turning broth into a yucky mess. I did that once with moms dumplings in the oven it was not very edible I asked mom why they disappeared and she said you peaked and I had lol
Good TIP FOR EVERYONE Mysty! Thanks for posting, and your Mother was correct! Happy Crocking!
Made it. Ate it. Loved it. It’s going in the recipe box. Thank you!
Were you supposed to use regular size bescuits? We bought the jumbo and we have one huge mushy pile of dough :(. This was after 40 minutes of cooking. I am trying to bake this dish (a friends suggestion to try and cook the dumplings).
Sharon, thanks for the post, but the jumbo were probably too big, I believe the recipe says to use the 10 oz. size, and two of them. They are not as thick as the jumbo! Please make again, as it really is a favorite among our Facebook friends. Happy Crocking!
I use the big biscuits every time. I do pat mine in flour because they were a little too gooey the first time I made them. This meal is a regular usually weekly at my house!!!!!!! LOVE IT!!!!!
Donna good tip on putting the biscuits in flour! Thank YOU!
I am starting this recipe now and pretty excited!! I did buy the frozen” dumplings” can you advise me when i should add them … or should i defrost in fridge before adding…. please advise and thank you!!
Kira I use the biscuits, but I am sure the frozen dumplings will work, just add them with about one hour to go…. please post back and let everyone know how it turned out! Happy Crocking!
This looks delicious but I try to stay away from the cream soups when I cook and prefer to use natural ingredients. Do you have a suggestion of what I can use as a substitute? Thanks!
Christine, you could use chicken broth, and thicken with flour, although it may not have the flavor that you would get from the creamed soup. Let me know how it turns out. Happy Crocking!
Instead of flour, I’d grate in some fresh raw potato or maybe a combination of potato, turnip, celeriac, and/or parsnip. That’d give more flavor and more nutrition than flour 🙂
What size crock pot is this recipe for? It just says to fill the crock pot?
Crystal as a rule of thumb a crock pot should be 1/2 to 2/3 full to crock properly. I made this with my 5 quart crock pot. Happy Crocking!
Crystal as a rule of thumb, you should fill a crock pot from 1/2 – 2/3 full to crock properly. I believe I used my 5 quart crock pot on this recipe. Happy Crocking!
Can the chicken be frozen when I add it to the crock pot? I plan to cook it on high.
Kristina you should be able to use frozen chicken, but it may take a little longer with the chicken being frozen. Be sure to stir often as directed… Happy Crocking!
Looks yummy though in australia what would i substitute for biscuit dough? is it just like bread dough? Thanks 🙂
Rayleen, just today a Facebook friend shared a link to a copycat recipe, so I will share with you. This is the link for a copycat baking mix. She had not tried it but said she would very soon. http://www.food.com/recipeprint.do?rid=357101 Hope this helps, Happy Crocking!
I guess Im a horrible cook because somehow all my biscuits stuck together and one big gooey mess. 🙁 I was really looking forward to pleasing my family with this.
Krisi did you add the biscuits during the last 30 minutes? I am so sorry your meal did not turn out. I’ve not had this problem before, so I just don’t know what happened. 🙁
Silly question…. could I use thighs instead of breasts??
Absolutely!
My version is very similar except I omit the carrots & celery. I use refrigerated crescent roll dough rather than biscuits. It makes the dumplings light & fluffy with the tiniest hint of sweetness. SO GOOD!

Can I make this with split chicken breasts and just debone before putting biscuits in?
Hi Nicole you can! The fun of cooking and crocking is changing thing up to meet your needs.. Happy Crocking!
Just made this tonight I used Pillsbury French Loaf instead of canned biscuits. I cut the roll length wise, then 1/2″ circles and cut the circles in half as well. IT TURNED OUT AMAZING!!!
Kali thank you so much for posting, the readers love to hear results before they make a recipe. Thank YOU…and Happy Crocking!
No problem it was amazing 🙂 the only thing I need to add is that I had it on high the entire day and kept it on high when adding my dough, cooked it for 1hr 30m covered (started dough at 4 it was done by 530)
I have made this too. Although i rolled the biscuits in flour before putting them in the crock pot to prevent sticking together..didn’t really like the doughy taste of them..i think next time i will bake the biscuits in the oven them put them on top of the chicken mixture.
Gotta tell you I made this using chicken legs, followed the recipe, except I seasoned my chicken with seasoned salt, pepper and onion and garlic powder. The flavor was awesome,I cooked mine on low,but when it came to the dumplings,I only used 1 can and they took like 3 hours to cook and you have to keep stirring them or it’s one big dough ball, don’t know how they could possibly be done in 30 mins,so if your gonna make this give your dumpling a good 3 hours to cook, other than that,it was GREAT !!
Do you drop biscuit pieces on top or mix them in? I want to make this tomorrow since the temperature outside is dropping!
Lori you do drop the biscuit pieces on top and mix them I would slightly mix, just a bit. Be sure to check the biscuits so it is no longer raw in the middle. Happy Crocking!
What’s the serving size / servings per recipe for the nutrition facts? Trying to figure out how much a serving for those nutrition facts would be please? THanks
Jenn all of the serving sizes are in the upper right hand corner of the page. But happy to share that the Crock Pot Chicken & Dumplings serve 4-6 :-)! Happy Crocking!
hi could I use frozen dumplings instead I always have them on hand??? if so does anyone know when I should add them??
I would think the frozen dumplings would work fine, I would add them in the last hour to an hour and a half of crocking time. Hope this helps, and Happy Crocking!
When I make this, I always double the recipe for my family of five. Plus we love leftovers. I substituted one can of Cream of Celery in place of one can of the Cream of Chicken, and used chicken broth as well as water. I must say this was the best it has ever been, and I will make it like that from now on. It was delicious!
Thanks Melissa!
In the crock now! The house smells wonderful! Can’t wait for dinner, Thank you for sharing!
I bought containers of diced celery, another of onions, and a bag of shredded carrots….Prep time was less that 3 minutes!!!!! Easy, and quick…..looking forward to dinner tonight!
Should i stir the chicken mixture before adding the biscuits?
Denise there is no need to stir the chicken mixture, it will just cook in it’s own juices. Thanks for the question, and Happy Crocking!
Is a 4QT crock pot big enough for this? I’m staying with friends and I don’t have mine with me and all they have is a 4QT
Katie, it sounds like you use you larger one for this recipe. Rule of thumb is that a crock pot should be 1/2 – 2/3 full for it to crock properly. I believe you will be OK with the 4 quart. Go for it, and Enjoy! Happy Crocking!
I have thin sliced chicken breast. Will that make a difference in the cook time? Can’t wait to make it.
Jennifer it really depends on how your crock pot crocks, but I would think most likely it would decrease the crocking time. Happy Crocking!
If you use the bisquick dumplings, should you stir them in?
Hi Brynn… follow the recipe the same. Happy Crocking!
How much water do u need?
Alyson I use a measuring cup and just cover the ingredients.
Will it still taste good with the vegs? I don’t have them on hand and honestly don’t like them either…
Danielle, you should make all recipes your own! If you don’t like something you can substitute for things you do like, or simply omit them. A substitute would be say adding a soup to a recipe that you don’t care for, so switching to another cream soup, that you like. But you are welcome to ask… Thanks for the question, and Happy Crocking!
Is the nutritional info per serving? Fat grams, etc seems high for one serving with these ingredients. I’m trying to convert it into Weight Watcher points. Thanks
It is per serving Emily. I have recalculated the facts and it did change slightly, but I did correct the facts. Thanks for checking with me. 🙂
